Arts & Spirituality

Fr. Seby Mascarenhas, principle of the All India Mission Seminary, Goa

Fr. Seby will be the guest of the Institute in June, 2008 and will facilitate a number of workshops and lectures in Ottawa, Peterborough and Winnipeg. The All India Mission Seminary has been in the forefront in working with the arts and spirituality as well as in working with inculturation and liberation theology.

He is one of the priests featured in “The Lotus and the Cross,” a documentary film that explores
the phenomenon of 'Inculturation' and how Hindu rituals and symbols are intermingling into the practice of Christianity in India. This video also focuses on the humanitarian work of Father Seby in the field of education and upliftment of tribal peoples. He too has developed a version of 'Indian Rite Mass' that is suited and more appealing to simple village folk, incorporating their songs and dance to celebrate the Eucharist.

Fr. Seby is a passionate supporter of the incorporation of the arts in spirituality. He has organized two major art exhibits featuring work by Hindu, Moslem, Tribal and Christian artists. One on the theme of creation, and one on the meals of Jesus. These artists depict these themes as understood from within their own cultural and religious context and present and Asian perspective one these biblical themes. Fr. Mascarenhas has also been central in the development and production of several plays presenting the gospel teachings in the Indian context. He and the students at the seminary have also produced cd’s of contemporary Christian music.

His explorations in the use of art in spiritual practice has even extended to the creation of a meditation garden with a sculpture of and Indianized Mary and Jesus and pays respect to the major faiths of India: Tribal religions, Sikhism, Islam, Zoroastrianism, Jainism, Hinduism, and Christianity.
